Although the Adventure Aquarium is technically located in Camden, New Jersey, it’s really just a hop, skip and a jump away from downtown Philadelphia. Bonus, it’s a great spot to catch a glimpse of the lovely Philly skyline across the water.
Aquarium Family Fun
Catering to families and children of all ages the aquarium is an interesting mix of traditional aquatic exhibits and some extra-special opportunities to interact with the sea creatures in some interesting ways.
The Adventure Aquarium does offer a number of exhibits to get hands-on by touching creatures like sea stars, shrimp, and even sharks. However, some of the most captivating experiences to be found are those that allow visitors to view aquatic animals as they move uninhibited in their own environments.
Perhaps the most adorable example of this is at the Little Blue Beach, featuring the world’s smallest penguins known as Little Blues. Nothing short of delightful, be sure to time your visit to coincide with feeding time. Like most of us, these fabulous waterfowl seem to be at their happiest when they’re munching on delicious snacks.
Thrill seekers can take a wobbly walk across the 81 foot rope Shark Bridge that traverses a tank containing nearly 30 sand tiger, sandbar, and nurse sharks. For those feeling faint of heart, the Shark Realm Exhibit also features large viewing areas where visitors can watch the stealthy swimmers behind the glass with their feet safely planted on dry land.
Everyone’s favourite gentle giants can be viewed in the Hippo Haven Exhibit. Button and Genny, the aquarium’s 3,000 pound Nile hippopotamuses, are often spotted bouncing through the water or nestled together on the shore in a cozy cuddle. Hippo fans can enjoy Button and Genny from vantage points both above and below the water while learning about the environment for all types of creatures that reside along the Nile river.
