Home to Baltimore’s 137 acre urban park of the same name, the Patterson Park neighborhood features block upon block of quintessential Baltimore Row Houses. These attached town-homes span the length of a city block and are fascinating blend of brick and formstone facades, nearly each of which is fronted with well worn – yet lovely – white marble stairs.
Site of the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812, but established as a public park in 1827, Patterson Park provides the area with much-enjoyed green space and features sports facilities, a pool, walking trails, a pond, and an amazing observatory-style Pagoda. Surrounding streets offer passers by a small but delicious selection of charming restaurants and cafes, perfectly representative of Charm City itself.
Coffee at Patterson Perk
A climb to the top of the Patterson Park Pagoda rewards visitors with an extraordinary view of the neighbourhood. What better to pair with an extraordinary view than an extraordinary cup of coffee? And to keep up your fuel for a stroll around the “best backyard in Baltimore,” throw in a perfectly crumbly scone from the self-proclaimed “Coffeeshoppe Extraordinaire,” Patterson Perk.
For an extra treat, make it a “con panna” by topping your espresso with some fluffy whipped cream. Located at 2501 Eastern Avenue, just south of the park, Patterson Perk is practically perfect start to a Patterson Park-filled day.
Authentic Mexican “Flavour of the Park”
Don’t be fooled by the modest exterior of this tiny, hole-in-the-wall restaurant on the corner of Eastern and South Linwood Avenues. This cozy restaurant may be small but the authentic Mexican dishes offer big flavour – and at a low cost.
Patrons of Taqueria Sabor Del Parque can sample generous servings of shrimp tacos, chorizo burritos, or a light plate of extra spicy guacamole – all for under $5 each. Feeling adventurous? Try the nopales con cebolla (cactus with onions)!
Classic Baltimore Eats in a Reclaimed Pharmacy
For a further taste of Baltimore character, the neighbourhood’s go-to brunch joint, BistroRX, is named in homage to the former pharmacy in which it’s currently located.
A classic but casual menu, BistroRX has a good selection of lighter-fare, making it ideal for mid-morning meals. Visitors should be sure to try the true-to-its-roots, Maryland specialty: Baltimore Benedict featuring jumbo lump crab.
Ice Cream and Sweets for You and Your Pup
Anytime is a good time for ice cream when you’re in Patterson Park. With a walk-up pick up window and a selection of frozen goodies especially for your canine friends, BMore Licks is the kind of place to provide a warm welcome while you enjoy their cold treats.
Try their limited edition sweet potato pie ice cream with graham crumble and candied pecan or stick with the waffle cone ice cream taco. Either way your sweet-tooth wins!
